Drive north out of Denver and you cross into Catawba County. Sherrills Ford sits just over that line on the same west shore, but on paper it's a different place: a different county, a different school system, and a different metro area in the government's data.
A crossing older than the lake
The name goes back to about 1747, when Adam Sherrill and others forded the Catawba River here, heading west. Today Sherrills Ford is unincorporated, and since the 2010 census it has been counted inside the Lake Norman of Catawba census area along with Terrell, Monbo and Long Island. That area had 8,658 residents in 2020, up from 7,411 in 2010.
Why the county line matters online
Denver belongs to Lincoln County and the Charlotte metro area. Sherrills Ford belongs to Catawba County and the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metro.
